Thy Art Is Murder is an Australian deathcore band from Blacktown, Sydney, that formed in 2006. The band consists of vocalizer Chris "CJ" McMahon, guitarists Sean Delander and Andy Marsh, drummer Jesse Beahler and bassist Kevin Butler. Thy Art Is Murder has released 5 studio albums since formation.

Their 2008 EP Infinite Decease, reached position no. 10 on the AIR Charts upon release,[ane] and their 2nd full-length album Hate debuted at no. 35 on the ARIA Charts,[2] making them the offset farthermost metal band to e'er reach the Top xl of this nautical chart.[3] The anthology also reached no. 1 on AIR[4] and both no. two and no. 4 respectively on the United states and Canadian iTunes metal charts on its calendar week of release.

2006–2010: Germination, EPs and The Adversary [edit]

Founding member and guitarist Sean Delander

Formed in 2006, in the Western Sydney locality of Blacktown, the grouping originally consisted of vocaliser Brendan van Ryn, guitarists Gary Markowski and Sean Delander, bassist Josh King and drummer Lee Stanton. Building on a loyal following among fans of deathcore in Western Sydney, they recorded a 3 track demo This Hole Isn't Deep Plenty for the Twelve of You. They returned to the studio in 2008 to record the EP Infinite Decease, which gained them farther attending for van Ryn's sacrilegious and misogynistic lyrics and song titles. The EP reached number 10 on the AIR Charts.[1]

Post-obit two years of relentless national touring, it was announced in 2008 that van Ryn was nearly to depart from the group. 2011–2014: Hate [edit]

2011 saw further line-up changes, notably the departure of founding member and lead guitarist Gary Markowski. Delander decided to switch duties from guitar to bass, making way for Andy Marsh and Tom Dark-brown to join on guitar. Kevin Stewart-Panko of Decibel Mag awarded Hate a score of 1 out of x and criticizing the band for non going "out of their way to push the envelope or add together a modicum of originality or value to metal as a whole."[xiii] In January 2013, the band performed at the Sydney Big Day Out festival; the only other farthermost metal ring ever to be featured on the line-up was Blood Squeegee in 2004. Following their second European tour in February and March[14] Thy Art Is Murder signed to Nuclear Blast on 24 Jan 2013 for distribution of Hate outside Commonwealth of australia. On 13 March 2013, Triple J announced that Thy Art Is Murder would be headlining the Hate Across Commonwealth of australia tour with Cattle Decapitation, King Parrot and Aversions Crown.[15]

On xi Apr 2013, Sumerian Records officially announced that the group had just lost the opening support on the United States' annual Summertime Slaughter Tour. The proclamation was met by some controversy due to the fact that the group was to be chosen past a voters' poll and American deathcore band Rings of Saturn had in fact won the vote past 1%.[xvi] [17] [xviii] Eventually, promoters chose to include both bands.

On 17 June 2013 the ring revealed they would exist touring across Australia with Parkway Drive as function of their x Years of Parkway Bulldoze tour.[19] The same day, the band lost out to Bleed from Inside at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards where they had been nominated every bit Best New Band.[xx] On 15 October 2013 the ring were nominated in the Best Difficult Rock/Heavy Metal category for the 2013 ARIA Awards, somewhen losing out to Karnivool.[21] The ring headlined their second ever bout through North America in November and December 2013, dubbing it the Hate Across America. The band was announced on the lineup for Download Festival 2014.

The ring made Australian news headlines in tardily February 2014, when McMahon encouraged fans to get onstage during their set up on Brisbane leg of the Soundwave Festival tour.[22] [23] [24] Promoter AJ Maddah afterwards tweeted his determination to take the band off the rest of the tour calling them "disrespectful arseholes" and claiming that McMahon had told the crowd that "in that location are m of yous and dozens of security. 2015–2018: Holy War and Honey Desolation [edit]

In the same interview, he too shared that the band had started planning a new split EP to follow-up 2016's The Depression Sessions.[33]

2019–present: Human Target [edit]

On 1 April 2019 it was revealed longtime drummer Lee Stanton had departed the ring and their backup Jesse Beahler of the American death metal band Jungle Rot had taken his place full-fourth dimension.[34] On 26 April 2019, the band revealed their new album would exist titled Human Target and released the title track single. The album was released on 26 July 2019 through Nuclear Blast Records.[35]

On 30 Oct 2020, the band released a single titled "Killing Flavour" which guitarist Andy Marsh explained was nigh Thanksgiving revealing "Killing Season touches on the darkness surrounding the origins of Thanksgiving, and while that subject is relevant at this time of twelvemonth, we desire y'all to remember of the atrocities both by and present that deserve acknowledgement."[36]

Thy Art is Murder's music has been described past music critics every bit deathcore,[37] [38] which draws from both metalcore and death metal.
